Salem Police Received 911 Call About 1 a.m. The Morning of November 1, 2023.

The basketball player seen here, meeting with L. Gov. Kim Driscoll in Massachusetts at the state Capital, was shot multiple times and died inside his car today. His name is Carl Hens Beliard. He was attending Salem State University at the time of his shooting.

According to an Associate Press article, Salem police…found…Beliard inside a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to Salem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. I can’t fully understand the grief and pain of losing someone at such a young age and with such a promising future ahead.

The Problem Defined

According to Pew Research Center, 6 in 10 Americans believe gun violence is a very big problem today. Citizens bought nearly 60 million guns during the pandemic alone. According to the Washington Post, there are currently more guns than people in the U.S. 

While typical gun owners are responsible and safe, more than 35,000 people have been killed in gun violence so far in 2023. Since it is not possible to know if everyone you see is responsible or intending to cause harm, what can you do about it?

Many people are turning to gun ownership. However, there’s no guarantee he would have been able to protect himself with a gun in this situation. Many people are not trained in proper gun use, especially in intensely emotional and life-threatening situations. And guns are not always carried and available at all times.

American drivers spend hundreds and hundreds of minutes behind the wheel each year. And that doesn’t count time in the car while they are not driving. That being said, there are over 6 million car accidents each year. According to Medical News Today, it’s most often the third leading cause of death.

My Experience with Guns and Driving

This is personal to me. Several years ago, when my son was about 6 years old, I decided to take him to a college basketball game being held in a professional team’s arena. While we were driving, a car pulled beside us and matched our speed for a few minutes. Feeling uncomfortable, I took my car off cruise control and slowed down. The car slowed down with me. 

I decided to speed up quickly and the car matched my maneuver. I decided to slam the brakes and get behind the car. He slowed down to 20 miles per hour on the freeway. So, I floored it and got up to a speed I didn’t feel safe driving at, with him chasing me, so I slowed down to freeway speed. 

This time when the other driver pulled up beside me, he pulled out a gun and put it up to his window. I immediately grabbed my phone and dialed 911. Luckily, he sped off when he saw me calling for help.
