6 Additional Security Solutions Customers Seek Alongside Bulletproof Glass

When spending on expensive bulletproof windows, many clients expect other protective factors in addition to their purchase. Clients are often looking for elements such as UV protection, weatherproofing, soundproofing, and other factors. Bulletproof glass is thick and strong with many protective layers. It can often hold up against other impacts or security measures, making bulletproof glass ideal far beyond fighting against bullets.
Making something resistant can be complicated and hard to come by. We mostly prefer to call Bulletproof windows Ballistic or Bullet-resistant for their resistance to bullets. Clients are often searching for what makes a bulletproof window secure in other ways and we hope to answer some of those questions.
Is Bulletproof Glass Soundproof?
The thicker the glass the harder it is to hear someone. You’ve probably noticed this when talking to a teller at a bank behind bulletproof glass. They typically need a speak-thru or a little opening to hear the person on the other side. Casual conversations through bulletproof glass might feel like you didn’t put your hearing aids in that day.
Although it’s difficult to hear, bulletproof glass isn’t entirely soundproof. It may buffer the voices heard, but if someone speaks loud enough, they can still be heard. Soundproofing often requires extensive materials and insulation to ensure nothing can be heard on the other side. Regardless, bulletproof glass is still effective for private conversations as long as these chats aren’t shouted. If soundproofing is your only reason to purchase bulletproof glass, there are far better soundproofing alternatives.
Is Bulletproof Glass Fireproof?
Bulletproof glass consists of a combination of glass and special plastic layers that help slow the bullet. While these layers are vital, they are not fireproof. The plastic layers will melt and the window will lose its ballistic standards. Ordinary glass during high temperatures will break with high heat. Ballistic glass can break just the same.
Something to note about bulletproof glass is it will take longer to break in a fire. During an escape, be sure to have a safe exit that doesn’t include breaking a bulletproof window. A person trying to break a bulletproof window will be far less successful than trying to escape another way.
Is Bulletproof Glass Shatterproof?
The first layers of glass will still shatter upon impact but tend to stay relatively intact. Windows that can merely bounce bullets off without a single scratch don’t exist. Apologies to all the Hollywood movies of people hiding behind car doors, with the glass and door completely untouched by the approaching bullets. It would be amazing if bullets could simply bounce off bulletproof glass.
However, bulletproof glass can stay intact even as the window cracks. If the proper bullet hits the UL standard-level bulletproof glass, there should be no spalling on the other side of the window. Shattering on bulletproof glass works differently than the shattering of ordinary glass. This is similar to when a windshield is struck, the glass will shatter but not collapse on impact.
Bulletproof glass is not shatterproof, but the entire window won’t fall apart when initially hit. Most of the glass will crack but will remain mostly intact when impacted with a bullet.
Is Bulletproof Glass Weatherproof?
From hurricanes to tornados to high winds, Bulletproof glass can withstand many weather impacts. This provides a better and stronger replacement for hurricane or impact glass and can kill two birds with one stone. Bulletproof glass can resist both bullets and weather.
Since bulletproof glass can withstand the high impacts of a fast-approaching bullet, it can withstand the impacts of an incoming storm. We have experts who go through and rigorously test our glass to ensure it can withstand high impacts. When it comes to withstanding weather, bulletproof glass is a safe bet to prevent extensive damage.
Is Bulletproof Glass UVProof?
Without UV block, furniture and items inside the home can become sunbleached and dry. Nobody appreciates a bad sunburn just by sitting on their living room sofa or getting underage wrinkles. Most modern windows are built with UV protection in mind and often have a certain percentage of UV block.
Armitek’s bulletproof glass includes special layers that protect the UV light. Bulletproof glass is 99% UV-resistant, which is far more protective than other ordinary glass windows.
Most windows are commonly known to provide some form of UV block. If a customer is looking for a UV block without any other protection, bulletproof glass might be above their price range.
Bulletproof glass may be nearly UVproof, but it provides far better protection from sunburns. The UV block is an added bonus to the many other benefits of bulletproof glass.
Is Bulletproof glass sniperproof?
This depends on the type of glass you get and the UL Standard level. A level one bulletproof glass can barely stop a 9 mm handgun whereas a more niche heavy-duty glass such as a level 5 or 8 can withstand a sniper bullet.
These windows are much thicker and more durable to hold against the high impact of a sniper bullet. However, like any bulletproof glass, sniper bullets can still penetrate if hit enough times. A one-square-foot piece of bulletproof glass is often shot one to five times depending on the UL Standard level glass to test its strength.
Perhaps bulletproof glass isn’t entirely sniperproof, but it can certainly slow a few sniper bullets if using the proper level of glass.
Conclusion
Adding additional security measures to bulletproof glass can be hard to come by.
It’s difficult to make a piece of glass completely bulletproof. Things such as weatherproofing and waterproofing are easy to install in bulletproof glass. More intense proofing such as fireproofing and sniperproofing can be far more extensive and difficult to manufacture in clear bulletproof glass.
Armitek’s bulletproof glass is ‘proof’ that ballistic glass works. While we prefer using the term ballistic or bullet-resistant, many know our glass as bulletproof. The added security for bulletproof glass can improve your building exponentially, but it’s nice to have other security elements in addition. Let us know if you have any security questions and we are happy to help and answer.
