Backglazing

Backglazing: Retrofit without Renovating

Many buildings are unable to replace their existing windows with bulletproof glass. In some cases, windows can’t be replaced because of the building’s historical significance. In others, the cost of removing existing window frames and installing new ones that can support the weight of ballistic glass can be too expensive.

Whatever the challenge, Armitek has a solution. Using a technique known as backglazing, our ballistic glass can be installed behind existing windows, preserving the original structure. This method improves the window’s strength, security, and insulation capabilities, all without the need for a replacement.

What is Backglazing?

Backglazing involves adding a second layer of glass, in this case ballistic glass, against the interior side of an existing window. If the current frame can support the weight, the ballistic glass can be installed directly alongside the original glass using the same frame. If not, a new frame is added adjacent to the existing one, and the ballistic glass is installed in the new frame. This approach is more cost-effective than removing existing frames before installing new ones.

Benefits of Backglazing

1. Enhanced Security
One of the main advantages of backglazing is the increased security it provides. Adding an interior pane of ballistic glass creates an additional barrier against forced entry. Whether you’re in a high-crime area or simply want peace of mind, backglazing can offer an extra layer of protection.

2. Improved Energy Efficiency
Windows are a common source of heat loss in buildings. Backglazing helps to reduce drafts and improve insulation by creating an air or gas-filled space between the two panes of glass. This extra layer acts as a buffer, preventing heat from escaping in the winter and keeping your building cooler in the summer. This can lower energy bills and enhance the overall comfort of your space.

3. Noise Reduction
Backglazing can significantly reduce outside noise. The additional layer of glazing helps to block sound, making your indoor environment more peaceful and relaxing.

4. Increased Durability
By adding a second layer of glass, backglazing can help your windows withstand the elements more effectively. It offers greater resistance to extreme weather conditions, including storms, high winds, and hail. This can prevent damage to the primary windowpane and reduce the need for costly repairs or replacements.

5. UV Protection
Armitek’s backglazing systems include specialized coatings that block harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. This not only protects your furniture, carpets, and other interior items from fading, but it also helps maintain a more comfortable indoor environment.

Where is Backglazing Used

Backglazing is suitable for a variety of applications, including:

Backglazing can also be used to protect the lower portion of very tall windows without the cost of replacing the entire window.

Why Choose Armitek?

Armitek’s ballistic glass is engineered to be lighter and thinner than other bulletproof glass on the market. This means that at lower protection levels, our glass can be retrofitted to use your existing window frames. If higher levels of protection are needed or your existing window frames can’t be replaced, Armitek’s expert technicians will work with you to design a custom backglazing solution to meet your needs and fit your budget.
