Shot Through the Head: How Ballistic Glass Could Save An Employee From Instant Death
July 4th, 2022, a group of drunk drivers sped down a busy road shooting their rifles in the air as they passed. Although they had no intention of shooting any buildings, they were too arrogant to notice one bullet graze right through a fifth floor window.
With it being a holiday, most employees of this office building were out enjoying time with their families or relaxing at home. One particular employee decided to work that day, enjoying the warm sunlight as he worked on the fifth floor. Although this is based off of an actual event, for confidentiality, we will name this employee Daniel.
Daniel was used to hearing the afternoon traffic through his window. It was the fourth of July and the streets were congested with cars hurrying to their destinations. Daniel lived far away from family so he found no point in being home when he could get work done at the office.
Moments before the incident, Daniel left early.
You could hear the gunshots through the walls, shouts from the road making every employee stop to look out their windows. Weaving through traffic the shooters were pointing their guns every which direction, shooting at lamp posts and eventually the fifth floor window of the office building.
Daniel returned to his office the next morning to find the room in complete shambles.
“What happened here?” Daniel had asked.
Paperwork was flown in every direction, his office chair knocked over on the floor with chunks of foam and shredded fabric littered on the carpet. Daniel looked up at the window. A clean hole reflected the size of a bullet, the hole surrounded by cracked glass.
Daniel considered the path the bullet had taken, returning back to the chair. At the head of his office chair, the bullet had broken through the fabric and landed on his desk. A clean line had dug through the wooden surface of the desk where the bullet sat after its path of destruction.
Daniel held his breath as he stared at the bullet on his desk.
Had he stayed in the office just a few more moments, he would have been shot right through the head.
Before this instance, it was assumed that ballistic windows would only be needed for the first floor. The first floor wasn’t the window that got shot that day and this business decided it would be best to protect all windows on that side of the building.
In desperate need to protect the employees across all five floors, Armitek was able to come and install bulletproof windows on this side of the building.
Now Daniel can sit comfortably at his desk on the fifth floor, knowing that ballistic glass is protecting him from getting shot in the head.
Under different circumstances, it may have been better for this company to consider ballistic glass before the shooting. They were unaware of any threats or even considered if ballistic glass was a viable option. Although Daniel was mercifully saved from getting shot in the head, having a bullet shoot through his chair was too close for comfort.
As crime rates increase and gun violence at large, having ballistic glass has become a must-have among offices. Businesses especially in bustling cities and heavy traffic areas are installing security in their windows to ensure the safety of their employees.
