Armitek Bulletproof Glass*

Protection for New and Existing Buildings

What is Bulletproof Glass?

Ballistic glass, often referred to as bulletproof glass or bullet-resistant glass, is a thick transparent material composed of alternating layers of laminated glass and softer transparent materials, such as acrylics or polycarbonates.

To qualify as ballistic material, bulletproof glass must meet or exceed established standards. In North America, the most common standard is the UL 752 standard, which defines several levels of protection.

How Does Bulletproof Glass work?

When struck by a bullet, regular glass has no means to absorb the impact, causing it to shatter from the force of the bullet. Due to the nature of its construction, bulletproof glass is able to absorb the energy of the impact, slowing a bullet and resisting penetration. This energy absorption is accomplished through the use of alternating hard and soft materials in the ballistic glass layers.

How Thick is Bulletproof Glass?

Bulletproof glass varies in thickness, depending on the level of protection. Ballistic glass is thicker and heavier than regular glass, and often requires custom window frames, which have been specifically engineered to handle the weight and thickness of the glass. Armitek’s ballistic glass has been engineered to be lighter and thinner than other bulletproof glass on the market, ranging from .6 inches up to 1.43 inches thick. This removes the need to replace window frames at lower protection levels. For detailed information on each level, please refer to our product data sheets.

Ballistic Glass vs. Security Film: Which Do You Need?

Window security film is often advertised as a less expensive solution than bulletproof glass. While it might be better on your budget, security film is not rated as a ballistic material and it will not stop bullets. The most reliable way to ensure your windows can stop bullets is to replace them with ballistic glass.

How Much Does Bulletproof Glass Cost?

The cost for ballistic glass ranges from $30 to $100 per square foot*, depending on the level of protection required and the installation environment. An additional cost that is often overlooked is the cost to replace current window frames with frames that will support the thickness of bulletproof glass. Armitek’s ballistic glass is thin enough to fit most current window frames, mitigating the potential cost of replacement frames.
